Seven Essene Mirrors- Relationships and the Spiritual Path
How many times a day do you look at a mirror?
Do you see beyond the image you are looking at?
Pools of dark still waters collected in a vessel
was used as a mirror way, way back in time.
Obsidian, a naturally occurring volcanic glass
were the first manufactured mirrors. Examples
can still be found in Anatolia, Turkey, believed
to date back to around 6000 BC. There is a more
intriguing aspect to the significance of mirrors as
the Essenes believed.
Who were the Essenes
The Essenes were an important Jewish group
which flourished in Palestine from the late second
century B.C. to the late first century A.D. Historians
and scholars like Philo, Josephus, Pliny, and
Hippolytus generally agree quite closely on the main
characteristics of the group. Asceticism was a
central trait.
Many Essenes were devoted to the celibate ideal,
though Josephus mentions a group who married.
They eschewed luxury items, such as oil, and avoided
all unnecessary social and economic contacts with
non-Essenes. Their highly regimented life centered
on prayers, rigorous work, frequent illustrations, and
studies of Scriptures. Essene was a name believed
to be applied by their contemporaries.
The Essenes were members of an ascetic Jewish
sect of the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD.
Most of them lived on the western shore of the Dead Sea.
They are identified by many scholars with the Qumran
community that wrote the documents popularly called
the Dead Sea Scrolls.
"(The similarity between a number of Essene and
Christian concepts and practices (kingdom of God,
baptism, sacred meals, the position of a central teacher,
titles of officeholders, and community organization) has
led some people to assume that there was a close kinship
between the Essenes and the groups around John the
Baptist and Jesus Christ. It is possible that after the
dissolution of the Essene community some members
followed John the Baptist or joined one of the
early Christian communities, but any other direct
connection seems unlikely.)

- Sixth mirror- quest in darkness, light and dark part of the soul
- Seventh mirror -Self perception
Through relationships, the mirrors reflect back to us,
at that moment, the power of thought, feelings, emotions
yet still unknown to us. We can not ignore the role of
relationships which we live each present moment. The
actions of our relationships, their choices, frustration, anger,
love or joy, wrong choices or wrong words are reflective
reality at that moment.
Patterns of behavior: radiating what we feel at
the moment, is mirrored back to us. We are
judging or frustrated at the moment; or realize
what we have given away, or lost or taken away
from us.
Gregg Braden writes: "From the perspective of the
ancient Essenes, every human on the earth is an
initiate in the Mystery School that we call Life.
Whether they are conscious of it or not, every
human will experience in the presence of others
mirrors of themselves in that moment. If we have
the wisdom to recognize those mirrors, we may
accelerate the evolution of emotion and
understanding."
We are made to believe that a trait in another
person that we dislike or disapprove reflects a
shadow of ourselves. Not necessarily so.
Negative experiences are not stumbling blocks
when dealt with properly.Look at these as
reflective mirrors that is calling our attention.
FIRST MIRROR reflects to us that which
we are at the moment. It could be a hurt
that nags now and then; a wrong-doing
that is almost forgotten that brought pain
or anger.Patterns of behavior that radiates
at that moment is mirrored back at us.
SECOND MIRROR reflects to us that
which we judge. It is something we have
an emotional charge with, something we
have either been wounded by in the past
and have not forgiven.Look at these issues
carefully.
If we judge and condemn with an emotional
charge,we will attract exactly what we judge
into our lives.A frustrating bahavior is reflected
back,if more than one person is involved,
consider this as a mirroring of reflective reality.
Possible common thread or possibility arise
from important issues with an emotional charge.
These are important values- honesty, integrity,
respect, kindness, compassion, etc..
THIRD MIRROR reflects back to us something
we lost, gave away, or was taken away. When
we see something we love and desire in another,
it is often something we have lost, given away
or had been stolen in our own lives. Every
relationship is a relationship with self and often
we try to reclaim what was lost, what we gave
away, or had been taken away as a child or
as an adult. It could be joy, innocence, honesty,
integrity, respect, courage or love. All of which
can be reclaimed within self.
FOURTH MIRROR reflects back to us our
most forgotten love. This could be a way of
life, a lost or unfinished relationship. Often
it is a past life where a wrong conclusion
from past experience was created. These
will recreate themselves over and over
until the right conclusion is registered in
the soul as wisdom. Mirrors can be subtle
and go unnoticed. These are different
qualities or patterns of compulsive or
addictive behavior in us that we see in
the eyes of someone else. It is giving away,
little by little, people or things that we hold dear.
These can include controlling trait, sex,
money, power, materialism and other issues
of a compulsive behaviour.These patterns
unfold slowly, rearranging lives to accomodate
these compulsive/addictive behaviours.
Unknowingly, a great part of oneself can
be lost slowly. When this mirror appears
and we can honestly look at these in the
eyes of someone else,it is a way to re-enforce
what was lost and perhaps find these lost
and forgotten loves.
FIFTH MIRROR reflects back to us
Father/Mother image. It is often said we
marry our father or mother. We also often
become them acting out the same healthy
and unhealthy patterns we learned as a child.
Our fathers and mothers to us as children are
Gods. It will often reflect the same relationship
we have with others and the Father/Mother
God principle.
Parents can possibly hold to us a mirror of
themselves and their expectations and filtered
down to their children. They hold a mirror
showing their beliefs and perceptions. This
mirror includes anyone who has cared or
cares for us. They hold a mirror where we
can see our expectations or our judgment.
SIXTH MIRROR reflects back to us the quest
for darkness or what is often referred to as the
Dark Night of the Soul. This is when we meet
our greatest challenges, our greatest fears. We
are making an effort to gather the tools and
understanding in life to confront them.
God never gives one any more than they can
handle and we have a choice in every experience
to greet it as a powerful manifestation of
God/Goddess or choose to be a victim.There
is a dark and a light side to all of us. It is our
choice to immerse in darkness or muster
the will to find the Light.
These are the pain, fears, doubts that is part
of life. This mirror holds the possibility of finding
the strength to move beyond. We have the tools
to deal with the darkness. People who care for
us hold before us a mirror where we can see
our expectations and judgments. Distinguish
the possibilities of the good and bad image
before us.
There is a balance in life- trust yourself, you
have learned your lessons. You can find
balance amid imbalance with this self-mastery.
The conscience holds a mirror of the experience
of light and dark.
SEVENTH MIRROR reflects back to us our
self-perception. Others will perceive and treat
us according to how we perceive and treat ourselves.
If we have a low self-esteem and do not
acknowledge our wisdom and beauty, others
will not acknowledge them. If we are angry,
bitter and unloving to others, they in turn will
often react in the same way towards us.
If we change our perception of ourselves, we
change our world. Maybe it is time to be kind,
loving and compassionate to ourselves and
others. Remember the saying, “The only
reason anyone has power over you is you
want something from them.” Whether it be
love, joy, or a personal God connection, maybe
that something can be found within.
What criteria or values do you live by? Do you
apply a yardstick in your life? The mirror concept
does not always apply. Don't get stuck with the first
mirror, which can be a reflection of something
about you that you'd rather forget. These encounters
reflect how you feel at the moment. There are
other mirrors to study. When you face up to one
mirror, miraculously, the other mirrors come at
you with a real force.
Sometimes the mirrors would apply, but sometimes
they wouldn't. We had discovered the first mirror, but
had yet to see the other mirrors, such as the second
mirror, which reflects what we judge in the moment.
We can be angry and adapt a get even mentality,
we can live in denial, thinking that people will get
what they deserve and that we feel nothing; or feel
compassion. We can come from a place with no
judgment, consent and allow ourselves to
acknowledge our feelings.
What the Essenes said was that through and with
our relationships, we get to know and master ourselves
in this world. We will see one or some combination
of mirrored patterns in others. Do you believe that
you are not good enough? Think about why you live
your life the way you do, and how you do it. It is in
the presence of others that we recognize ourselves.
- Compassion- no attachment to the outcome
- Thought without attachment
- Feeling without distortion
- Emotion without charge..... Gregg Braden
